Family and Matrimonial Law
Family law may involve planning but too often also involves dispute resolution.
We can assist with both aspects of family and matrimonial law in Ottawa.
Family law is a complex area, with various legislation, provincial, federal and international, that can affect your rights, responsibilities and interests. Prior to making any decisions, we encourage you to seek legal advice.
Effective handling of issues of family law requires skills in professionalism, understanding, practicality, and communication. We bring years of collective experience in dealing with diverse issues, and we can put our highly-practiced skills to protect your rights and interests. Whether you are contemplating a union, dissolving a marriage, dealing with custody matters, or facing a dispute, we can assist you with expert advice and a straightforward approach. Talk to us about how we can help you reach your goals for your family with trusted family law services in Ottawa.
In order to address these issues, we can assist you by drafting or reviewing Co-Habitation Agreements, Marriage Contracts, Separation Agreements and facilitating Real Estate Transfers. For more complex matters, our team will negotiate on your behalf, attend mediation and represent you in Court if litigation becomes necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
At Gibson Tanner Rabin LLP, we understand that navigating legal matters can be complex and overwhelming. Our FAQs are designed to provide clear, concise answers to common questions, helping you gain a better understanding of our services and processes.
Do you charge for an initial consult?
We will usually have a very short initial telephone conversation to identify the main issues. If we proceed from there, we will require a retainer.
Do you go to court?
Yes. Court proceedings are costly, both emotionally and financially. If court can be avoided, it should. If it cannot, we will advocate for you.
Do you go to mediation?
Yes. We prepare a mediation brief at the request of the mediator, and attend mediation with you. We have a great deal of experience in coming up with “outside the box” solutions.
